Typically, no. Containers are stored at secure intermodal depots that generally do not allow public access because of safety and liability concerns. Large loaders operate throughout the depot, with trucks entering and leaving all day. The depot selects a container matching the size and condition ordered,  We make sure to inspect it at pickup before bringing it to you.

Color cannot be guaranteed for Used containers because depot inventory changes daily and units are generally released based on the size and condition ordered. If color is important, a One-Trip container offers the best opportunity to request a preferred color. Light beige is most common, although gray, blue, burgundy, and other colors may be available. For multiple containers, we can request matching or similar colors, but all color requests are subject to availability.

Generally, no. Intermodal depots are busy industrial facilities with large loaders operating and trucks entering and leaving throughout the day. Because of safety and liability concerns, they generally do not allow the public to enter and browse containers. Access is typically limited to authorized pickups with a valid release. If you arrange your own container pickup, we will provide the depot and release information after your order is processed.

Sales tax depends on where the container is delivered or picked up and applicable state and local laws. American Containers LLC collects sales tax when required.

To determine whether your purchase may qualify for an exemption, review the sales tax exemption information on the Department of Revenue website for the applicable state, contact that department directly, or consult a qualified tax professional. Not all agricultural or business purchases are exempt.

Customers are responsible for determining whether their purchase qualifies for a sales tax exemption and for providing the correct, completed exemption certificate before purchasing. American Containers LLC must collect applicable sales tax unless the required exemption documentation has been received and accepted.

Container prices are based largely on local supply, condition, and availability—not just size. Because 40-foot containers are more common, their price can sometimes be close to or even lower than the price of a 20-foot container. Handling and depot costs are also similar for both sizes. A 20-foot container will often cost less overall, but the difference may be only several hundred dollars rather than half the price.

A 20-foot container requires at least 60 feet of straight clearance, while a 40-foot container requires at least 120 feet. Gates and entry points should be at least 14 feet wide, with at least 14 feet of overhead clearance from tree branches, power lines, and other obstacles. The delivery path and placement area must be firm, level, and free of obstructions.

Delivery trucks will not be driven through low-hanging branches or bushes. Ditches will only be crossed if they are shallow and the driver determines it can be done safely. We always strive to provide excellent service and make our customers happy; however, our drivers will not attempt any delivery path or placement that could create an unsafe situation or damage the truck, trailer, or other equipment.

Because the trailer tilts during unloading and may reach approximately 18 feet high, additional overhead clearance may be needed at the drop location. Please review our delivery guidelines before ordering.

A container can be placed on concrete, pavement, compacted gravel, or firm, level ground. Before delivery, make sure the delivery path and placement area are clear of hazards and obstructions and that the ground is firm enough to support the delivery truck and container.

A concrete or gravel pad is optional. If you choose to build one, we recommend making it at least 2 feet wider and 4 feet longer than the container. For placement on grass or in a field, select a dry, well-drained area where the container is less likely to settle or sit in standing water.

The container can be placed directly on the ground, but we recommend using level supports. Suitable supports may include solid concrete pavers or blocks, railroad ties, or pressure-treated 6x6 lumber. Raising the container improves airflow and drainage, helps keep it level, and makes it easier to pick up or move later.

If the container delivered does not match the size or condition purchased, or has a legitimate issue that falls outside the condition standards described on our website, please point it out before the container is unloaded. The customer may refuse delivery for a legitimate reason. We do not want a customer to accept a container that does not meet the agreed-upon order.

Before purchasing, please review our sample photos and container-condition descriptions so you understand what to expect. Sample photos represent the typical condition of our containers, but the exact appearance and color may vary.

If the container meets the agreed-upon size and condition but delivery is refused for another reason, the delivery charge will still apply and a 15% restocking fee will be charged. If you have questions about our condition standards or what to expect, please contact us before purchasing—we are always happy to help.

Yes, you can pickup your container at the depot, if you choose to go that route, as long as you have the proper equipment to safely transport a shipping container. If you don’t have equipment capable of safely hauling the container, we can help you with delivery. After the purchase is complete, we will be able to provide you with a release number and pickup information within 5-7 business days. You can then go to the intermodal depot designated on the release information, and have the container loaded for you. Please be aware you are required to comply with all DOT and OSHA rules while at the intermodal depot. American Containers LLC cannot be held liable for any issues after the container leaves the depot.

The biggest issue with tough doors is an uneven door frame.  If the ground underneath the door frame is uneven, or the container is loaded heavy to one side, or on a surface that allows it to lean or twist, the doors won't open and close properly. Container doors are built to be open and closed when the container is sitting squarely on a chassis.  Over the span of 20ft or 40ft, it is possible for a container to twist just enough for the door frame to be out of alignment. Ensuring that your container has been leveled up is the best way to solve that problem before it starts. You can also use an grease/lubricant on the hinges and work the doors back and forth for a few minutes to help  loosen them up.
